I used to play this amazing game called City of Heroes.
It’s gone now. It closed down a long time ago, close to five years, but I played it almost constantly from the day I started back in 2006 to the day it closed. I loved it.
It was a superhero “MMO” (massively, multiplayer, online, Role-playing game.) In other words, you took on the persona of a superhero and teamed up with other live people who played the game and took down the evil bad guys.
Scarlet Shocker was my main character (I don’t think she was my actual first, but was very close to it) and she could shoot blasts of electricity from her fingers to take down the bad guys. Very soon after joining I met a character called Corona, who was a fire tank, could absorb a lot of damage and take the aggro and we became firm friends. Her player turned out to be an Italian chap called Federico.
Federico is a very talented comicbook artist and has worked on various projects internationally. He drew a few images of our team over the time we played the game together and his stuff was always very well received. He also had his own website and a few other flash games and stuff too. So when I got this project going, I suggested he draw something for me that I then painted. I kind of promoted myself to “comic colourist.” Most of this is straight up watercolour, but the lightning strikes have highlights in gouache just to pick it out a bit.
This is the result, and it was a lot of fun to do. Initially I printed it, but of course the weight of printer paper is crap for painting – see the image below to see what I mean. In the end I had to rig up a light box and trace Federico’s outlines, then ink them in and then paint. I am pretty happy with the outcome and I believe he is too. It’s definitely something I’d love to do again.
So here we have some of my passions, gaming, superheroes, comics. All we need now is some great music and beer.
Everyone I know who played City of Heroes misses it greatly, but here’s to some fantastic memories.
